Public Service of Wallonia Economy, Employment and Research has announced its partnership in the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA). The move underlines the importance of the region’s metallurgical industry and the government’s regional circular economy strategy, Circular Wallonia.
Driven by rising demand across low-carbon energy technologies and electric vehicles, the world is currently facing a doubling of overall mineral requirements for clean energy by 2050. To prevent supply shortages with massive impact not only on the transition towards the EU Green Deal but also on the EU economy, it is paramount to educate, innovate and re-think our approach to raw materials. EIT RawMaterials is taking the global lead on this.
Over the last months, the task forces of the ERMA Cluster 1 have developed the first draft of an Action Plan on Rare Earth Magnets and Motors that addresses regulatory bottlenecks hindering the emergence of a strong European rare earth value chain, from (urban) mine to rare earth magnet and motor.
On 21 April, the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA) held a mid-term meeting for Cluster 2 focusing on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion to review the first inputs to the Action Plan and create a better link between the two ERMA workstreams: value chain-specific consultation processes and investment channel for raw materials projects.
